Anniversaries - 9/11
As I struggled with both my emotions and thoughts on what to post today, the anniversary and memories of 9/11 stirred relentlessly in my mind. The activities and on-going events of that day are indelibly etched in my mind. This poem is a small reflection of how I feel...
Used to mark and symbolize
A way to relive a memory – to immortalize
Typically intended to evoke sunshine and smiles
Though today it marks sadness and trials
A day this country thought it would never see
Someone attacking freedom and democracy
Thousands of lives violently ripped from our lives
Brothers, sisters, husbands and wives
But the lives that died weren’t all in the towers
As the stories affected millions within a minutes not hours
Across the country people began to mourn
Lives divided and allegiances torn
Kill the bastards many proclaimed
As several foreigners were named and blamed
Six degrees of separation slowly dissipated
Strangers became bonded; a new appreciation of life consummated
Color lines blurred, genders ignored as people congregated
A unity in grief was suddenly created
The UNITED States of America finally existed
Sadly, it took a nationwide catastrophe borne of hatred

The post isn't what I expected after reading yesterday's, but I can relate to this and thanks for trying to put into words what some of us feel or felt that day and now.
Nice reflection. Very heartfelt. Hopefully, we'll all keep these sentiments and not start to take them for granted after today and until the next anniversary or new catastrophe.
Brilliant post, this reminds me of the slave trade, "Thousands of lives violently ripped from our lives." Thank you for your insight and continual post on my blog...
